One of the earliest effects in the world of guitar was that of the wah pedal. Designed by the Thomas Organ Company to emulate a crying tone that could be achieved by trumpet players of the time. Wah pedals use potentiometers to alter the tone and frequencies of a guitar to create one of the most widely used effects of all time.
