Bass Guitars at World of Music
Operating down in the lower registers, the bass guitar is the instrument that holds the rest of the band together. Pitched an octave below its relative the electric guitar, the bass guitar is generally a four string instrument that operates in the rhythm section of a band. Since the 1960’s the electric bass has largely replaced the Double Bass in popular music styles and many genres of particularly heavy music have utilised 5 and 6 string basses to achieve even lower and heavier sounds.

Bass Guitars FAQ
Should I buy a 4-string or 5-string bass?
A 4-string bass is the right choice for most players and covers the vast majority of rock, pop, funk and blues music. A 5-string adds a lower B string for extended range, which suits metal, gospel and modern worship styles, but it’s generally easier to learn on a 4-string first.
What’s a short scale bass, and who is it for?
A short scale bass has a shorter neck length than a standard bass, which makes the frets closer together and easier to reach. It suits smaller players, younger players or guitarists moving to bass for the first time.
