Boost effects are simply a volume boost to help you cut through the mix or run a hotter signal into the front of your amp, whereas EQ and compressor effects give you a little more control. EQ is short for equalisation and gives the player control over the EQ curve of their instrument. This can sometimes come in the way of a simple bass, middle, treble control or sometimes gives you control over 7 - 10 or more frequencies, enabling you to shape your sound and cut and boost certain areas. Compressors control the attack and release of an instrument's signal. This can result in controlling dynamics or adding sustain but can also tonally adjust your instrument by changing transient qualities, which can sharpen or dull your instrument's attack.
