Digital & Analog Synths
While analog synthesizers and electronic instruments have roots in the early 20th century, their popularity and use in popular music came into fruition in the late 60's and early 70's. Since their use in the disco, progressive rock and pop music of the time, synths have been a widely used staple of contemporary style ever since. Analog synthesizers use various methods to generate electronic signals such as subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis, wavetable synthesis, frequency modulation synthesis, phase distortion synthesis, physical modeling synthesis and sample-based synthesis. These different approaches can in turn emulate traditional musical instruments such as flute, cello, piano, natural sounds such as wind and ocean waves as well as electronic timbres unique unto themselves. Synthesiser companies such Roland, Moog, Yamaha, Korg, Buchla, Oberheim, Sequential Circuits and more have helped shaped the music we know today, making the synthesiser one of the most important musical instruments of the 20th and 21st centuries.
